This Portland suburb is perhaps best known as the headquarters of Nike.

It’s fitting that a giant sports apparel maker chose to locate here, for Beaverton is close to just about any kind of athleticopportunity you can imagine: Both the ocean and the slopes are a little over an hour away. Plenty of hiking, biking, and golfing is available right in town (Beaverton has nearly a thousand acres of parkland).

For a more leisurely day, residents can hit the nearby Washington Square shopping mall or Beaverton’s weekly Farmers Market, which has been recognized as one of the best in the west. –B.D.
